Recently i’ve been hearing and reading a lot of sudden attacks that have been going on in KL. Girls – and even guys are getting attacked in broad daylight. It’s terrible to hear stories like this and i hate having to hear that innocent people are getting hurt. I’m sure you’ve read the story about the internet marketeer, Chin Xin-Ci that got attacked at a carpark, she posted pictures of her attack on facebook and it went viral. i’m glad she shared her survival story with the world.
There have been others going on where people get attacked in carparks. It’s freaky.
Maybe times are bad, maybe people are getting more desperate i’m not sure what it is, but everyone please please be more careful. Last Friday i had the pleasure of talking with Capoeria Instructor Soldado (Chris) and Farezza from Capoeira Camara Malaysia who spoke to me about basic self defense and how Capoeira can be seen as one of the martial arts used to protect oneself. Interesting enough i found out that because of the nature of Capoeira that looks like a dance, the movements actually camouflage the fighting movements. Hence one would not be able to anticipate the movement of a capoeira fighter/student.
Many people think of self-defense as a karate kick to the groin or jab in the eyes of an attacker. But self-defense actually means doing everything possible to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks you. Self-defense is not about using your fists.. but using your SMARTS!
Here’s what i learnt from the interview with Instructor Soldado and Farezza on the basics of Self Defense along with a few more tips i’ve found elsewhere.
BE SMART WITH YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKS! This was the very first thing Chris mentioned because of applications such as Foursquare and Facebook Check-in. I personally dislike these apps a lot. These are highly dangerous applications. Do people realise that you are letting the world know exactly where you are at that very moment? Chris gave the simple example : if say you tweeted, foursquared or checked in saying this I’m now sending my dog to the vet. You are basically telling possible robbers your house is available for a “party”. So be careful with your status updates.
BE AWARE! Awareness is one of the most important things in Self Defense. By being aware of your surroundings, many threats on the streets can be avoided. The minute you step out of the house, just have in mind that anything could happen, so have yourself on alert mode when you are out. If you see or sense problems on your way, change route or go to the other side of the road and prepare to run or defend yourself.
HEAD UP, EYES UP! Walk with confidence and don’t appear like an easy target, for example walking with your head down will make you seem like an easy target.. also because you don’t really know what’s going on around you. Random idea, walk like a gangster.. this goes out to mainly girls… I know this is not exactly the most feminine thing to do, but if you walk with a bit of bad ass swagger in you, maybe the person stalking you won’t want to mess with you. Tell me what you think on that thought.
GO FOR THE LIGHT! Keep to well lit areas, go with a buddy, avoid dangerous areas. This is one of the most obvious choices. Common sense would tell you anything can happen in the dark, you are most vulnerable so stay to well lit areas. If you do end up in places that are dim, have a friend with you or go in a group.
Your main aim is to ESCAPE which means to run away. Attacking your attacker is your last resort. Don’t be a hero and fight back, unless really really necessary. If you do end up retaliating to defend yourself. Remember these main target areas that hurt the most. EYES, NOSE, NECK, GROIN.
SPIKE APPAREL! As much as you may think this is a joke. I have a feeling it may work. Ladies high heel shoes or even flatties now come with sharp ornaments as decor. Your 6 inch heels is good enough to immobilize a person if they come up behind you – jab into that foot of theirs. And if your shoes have spikes, use them to your full advantage and give the person trying to grab at you a good kick in the groin.
